Health Advisory

As we are entering the peak season for respiratory illness and the end of semester study period and finals, we advise taking extra care in exercising hygiene precautions to avoid illness. Current campus public health surveillance indicators indicate elevated prevalence of flu (influenza virus) and COVID-19 among students (respiratory symptoms), and well as the emerging presence of a common virus which can cause gastrointestinal illness (nausea, vomiting, diarrhea).

Here are steps you can take to protect yourself and others:

  • Wash your hands for 20 seconds or longer (or use hand sanitizer that is at least 60% alcohol, if handwashing is not available to you. Note that hand sanitizer is less effective against gastrointestinal viruses). Wash your hands before and after you eat, prepare food, blow your nose, or use the toilet.
  • Stay home if you are sick.
  • Wear a mask if this is your personal preference and if you are feeling ill.
  • Pick up a COVID-19 test kit, available at no charge at the USC Bookstores and the CSC desks in USC Housing, as well as at the Engemann and Eric Cohen Student Health Centers.
  • Remember that regular sleep and exercise schedule along with good nutrition fuels your body and mind.

Reach out to us if you are feeling ill, overwhelmed or need support.

If you have not yet taken the flu or COVID-19 vaccines, this would be a good time to receive this extra protection.

Wishing you a calm study period and an enjoyable upcoming winter break.
