For the 2020-2021 policy year, the Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) provider, Aetna, implemented a change in the co-pay structure of visits. In previous plan years, students were responsible for a 10% co-pay for office visits. A benefit change was implemented for the current plan year, and the co-pay is now a flat $20. The policy change took effect on August 14, 2020.
This may not have been immediately felt by plan holders, as Aetna had previously liberalized their cost-share policy for telemedicine, primary care and specialty care, effectively waiving co-pays, due to COVID-19. Aetna’s liberalization of this policy expired recently, on January 31, 2021.
Aetna is closely monitoring the progress of the pandemic and will continue to adjust policies, including waivers, as appropriate to ensure access to care.
As the Student Health Insurance Plan strives to provide the best possible benefits at the lowest possible cost to students, we will monitor this benefit change and evaluate the insurance program to see if additional adjustments are needed.
