COVID-19 General Update (9/1/23)

We have seen a slight expected increase in COVID-19 cases recently, both at the LA County and campus levels, as people have returned from summer schedules into the patterns of fall activities. This follows a similar trend as in previous years when returns from travel and the increase in contact between people can lead to an uptick in cases. Campus COVID-19 protocols remain consistent with the systems in place from the previous academic year. The reminders in this message can serve to help reduce illness and help us navigate this fall’s respiratory illness season.

Building a Culture of Consent: Community Message

Building a culture of consent is a fundamental step in eliminating sexual assault, sexual misconduct, and gender-based harm in our campus communities.

As the 2019 Task Force Report on this subject found, “Transforming an institutional campus culture that celebrates integrity, respect, trust and achievement will take our collective resolve to fully realize.”

Every member of our USC student community is expected to understand that clearly obtaining consent in relationships and intimate encounters is the norm. Respect for others, including respect for self-identified genders, and sexual respect and acknowledging boundaries, is how Trojans treat each other. April 10, 2023 — A medical emergency during a sports event is something no one hopes for; but this year, when a student-athlete suffered a cardiac event during a men’s basketball practice, three athletic trainers from USC Student Health’s Athletic Medicine team – Jon Yonamine MS, ATC, CES; Erin Tillman MS, ATC; and Lauren Crawford Med, ATC, LAT – jumped into action and responded within critical minutes to provide life-saving care. 

For this outstanding accomplishment in the practice of medicine, all three were honored with the 2023 Life Saver Award from the California Athletic Trainers’ Association (CATA) in the Galen Center Hall of Fame….Continue Reading Life Saving Care in Athletic Medicine
