Description: Community Health Organizers (CHOs) advance wellbeing through community-engaged research, peer-to-peer capacity building, and advocacy with university administrators. CHOs are student workers employed by the Office for Health Promotion Strategy (OHPS) in USC Student Health. Paid position $16.78/hour.

Location: In person at USC Student Health, 1031 W 34th Street, Suite 201, Los Angeles, CA 90089 (Engemann Building). *Hybrid or remote models are unavailable for this position

Responsibilities:

  •  Community-Engaged Research
    • ○  Co-design qualitative research projects
    • ○  Facilitate focus groups
    • ○  Code and analyze data; synthesize and present findings
  •  Peer-to-Peer Capacity Building
    • ○  Recruit student organizations into the Wellbeing Champions network
    • ○  Lead initial consultation sessions with student leaders
    • ○  Work with student leaders to implement wellbeing strategies
    • ○  Review micro grant applications
  •  Advocacy
    • ○  Work with decision-makers to implement student-centered health-promoting actions
    • ○  Refine ideas and strategies proposed by administrators to incorporate the student perspective Commitment: 6 – 8 hours per week Training and Continuing Education
  •  Attend training sessions: December 1 & 2 at 9 am – 5PM, January 13 at 9am-1pm
  • 2 hours per month- attend continuing education meetings to build skills: qualitative research, community organizing, advocacy strategies, etc. (Jan 31, Feb 28, March 27, April 24, ALL DATES from 5 – 7 pm)
  •  Please note all training and continuing education is mandatory – no exceptions Ongoing Projects and Assignments
  •  1 hour per week – attend weekly team meeting with OHPS staff and CHO team to work on ongoing projects
  • 5 hours per week- work in office to plan, conduct research; engage well-being champions and lead meetings with student organization leaders
  •  Variable hours per month- attend data convenings addressing student well-being ; attend continuing education meetings (see monthly meetings)

Role Objectives:

  •  Establish rapport with student organizations reflective of the diverse student communities at USC
  •  Advocate for and promote awareness of the USC Well-being Collective
  •  Inspire and equip student organization leaders to take action to promote student wellbeing
  •  Infuse the student voice in the implementation of wellbeing initiatives

  • Undergraduate or graduate USC student – must be able to commit to Spring AND Fall 2024
  • Strong communication and facilitation skills
  • Knowledge of or willingness to learn about how systemic inequities contribute to disparities in health outcomes
  • Self-motivated and organized; ability to manage complex tasks in a fast-paced work environment
  • Desire to contribute positively to the culture of well-being at USC
