Information for Parents

In college, your student may encounter great opportunities, but also a variety of new life challenges, such as living alone for the first time, making new friends, and encountering new cultures and ideas. As a parent or advocate, there is much you can do to help your student handle these challenges.  We are also here to help your student thrive and to help you help them.  If you have concerns or questions, we encourage you to call us at (213) 740-7711 and consult with one of our on-call staff members.

Who We Are

The professional staff at Counseling and Mental Health Services includes psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, marriage and family therapists, and trainees.  We are committed to helping USC students surmount challenges successfully so that they can realize their academic, professional and personal goals.

What We Do

We are the first contact for your student when they need help with emotional or psychological issues. We aim to connect students to the services that will best support them, including both on- and off-campus options. We maintain relationships with a variety of treatment programs and specialty providers off-campus in order to meet the unique needs of each student.

On-Campus Services
  • Initial consultation to determine appropriate services

Accessing Crisis Services

In a crisis or emergency, we recommend you or your student call us at (213) 740-7711 to speak with an on-call counselor. Mental health counselors are also available after hours at this same number. During business hours, students may also walk in for in-person crisis services.

Accessing General Services

The first step is for the student to schedule an initial phone consultation. The student may call our office between 8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday or make an appointment online at MySHR. This screening provides an opportunity for the student to speak with a trained professional who will make recommendations and connect the student with the most appropriate resources.  While it is necessary for the student to make the initial call to access services, it is helpful if they are supported by their loved ones in this process.


We are committed to protecting students’ legal right to confidentiality. If a student has accessed services at our center, we cannot share that information unless the student has signed a release of information at our office that allows us to speak with another party. (Exceptions are made if there is a concern about the student’s immediate safety.) You may want to suggest that your student sign this release if you would like to be able to speak with us about their mental health care or our recommendations. A collaborative relationship between parents and Counseling and Mental Health Services helps many students thrive at USC.
