Psychological Services. Every effort has been made to ensure that your involvement with psychological services in the Eric Cohen Student Health Center is a valuable experience. We recognize that it is sometimes difficult to acknowledge a need for help and we support your doing so by trying to make accessing the services available to you as easy and stress-free as possible. Please take a few minutes to familiarize yourself with our program.
Confidentiality. We take confidentiality very seriously. One of the most important aspects of the relationship between a therapist and a patient is that it is a confidential relationship. This means that any information discussed in any session cannot be shared with someone without your permission.
Your psychological services record is NOT part of your student health medical chart. Your psychological records are accessed only by the Student Health Psychologist unless you authorize otherwise.
Clinical Staff. The clinical psychologist of the Eric Cohen Student Health Center is available for consultation for four free counseling sessions per academic year to students under the Student Health Center Fee. For appointments beyond those four, see "Insurance" below.
Appointments. To schedule an initial appointment, please call the Eric Cohen Student Health Center Administration at (323) 442-5980.
For Off-Hour Emergencies. There is a family physician on-call through the Family Practice Center 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Please call (323) 442-5900 and ask for the doctor on call.
Medications/Psychiatry. Should medications or psychiatric intervention be indicated, Dr. Garcia-Shelton will refer students to physicians in the Department of Family Medicine, the Department of Psychiatry, or through the network in the student's insurance plan.
Insurance. Students who are covered by the USC Student Health Insurance Plan (Blue Cross) may receive 25 counseling sessions per academic school year in addition to the four free sessions. Under this plan, students are required to pay 10% of each session after meeting there annual deductible. If you have a different insurance plan, please determine your benefits for "outpatient psychotherapy" with your insurance carrier benefit representative.
